Year 1, Day 1

Happy Birthday to my little one. Jackson celebrated his first birthday today, and so the adventure officially begins...for each day of his life this year, I will write a post reflecting something that I have learned during my interactions, and daily life with this precious boy of mine. And what a better way to start, than with his birthday party.

The lesson I learned: It's okay to eat your friends cupcakes if they are too slow. Of course, the polite thing to do is to wait it out until they decline or offer it to you, but we're talking about one year old children, so Jackson shouldn't be accountable for his thievery. Worth a million dollars, was the look on his face at the sight of his birthday cupcakes this afternoon. He grabbed for the one with the most frosting of course, like his mother, and with no hesitation. One tiny finger emerged from his little hand and plunged right into the bright yellow fish that sat on top a sea of blue icing. You would think, by the looks of it, that he would devour it in one bite, but he carefully and thoughtfully loaded up his finger in the frosting and then plummeted it into the icecream for good measure. With a combination of the two in his mouth, he seemed to be in pure bliss. Once he realized that the diabetic coma in front of him was all for him, there was no turning back. He ate his cupcake in no time, reached for Nina's cupcake across the table in an incredible stretch I thought impossible, and he finally scooped up Ella's remnants beside him. It wasn't until I diverted his attention to noise makers and moved him from the table that he was actually done with his party. The boy loves his sweets. Finally - something that he inherited from his mama! So remember - your birthday is a free pass to get away with anything you want. Eat whatever tickles your fancy, sleep in late, refuse structure, cry if you don't get your way, and enjoy every single minute of it. It only happens once in 365 days.
