I use to read novels and now I read board books. Let's be honest though, Wuthering Heights was never on my nightstand yearning for the pages to be turned. The books I gravitated toward were ones that you'd find under SELF HELP in Barnes and Noble. I craved inspirational, "how to make yourself a better person" books. If I wasn't reading one of those little gems, I would find myself turning the pages of some trashy summer beach read that morphs into a movie with B list actors.
Not having the time to read these fine pieces of literature is not a huge loss. It makes me happier and feel less pressure to be the perfect wife, mother, sister, friend, child, etc. In these books, I was always searching for ways to change my life and make positive steps for improving my relationships . . . I was looking for a way to fulfill spiritual needs and find my path in life. It was always a lot of work. I find it much more relaxing and entertaining to read about monkeys jumping on the bed, or cows and chickens living on Old McDonald's farm. What I learn from reading these books is that life is so much more simple than we make it out to be. You jump on the bed, you fall off. Every lesson you'd ever need to learn can be discovered in board books.
What I learned today: Maybe someday, I'll pick up the trashy novels and books on spiritual guidance, but for now, Eetsy Weensy Spider and I Love You Through and Through will fill my cup just fine. Hearing Jackson laugh and yearn for more changes my life in so many ways that a self help book or a B list actor can't possibly come close to matching.
