Year 1, Day 25

It's such a joy to see Jackson recognize faces and voices. It's a given now, that when you are in a different room than he and you say his name, he will come stumbling along looking for you . . . and when he finds you, you are greeted with a gasping laugh, a smile to brighten the room, and a frantic kick of his legs. I love that. For so much of his life before this, you had to guess that you were doing a good job and taking care of his needs because there was no real feedback from him. But now, it is everywhere. It is in the way that he smiles, laughs, reaches for you, and cuddles with you.

What i learned today: Relationships are formed by the work of enstilling the confidence that you will be there for that person. You have to prove your dependability, offer your unwavering support without judgement, and grow to love that person unconditionally, regardless of actions that you may or may not approve of at a given time. Jackson has grown to know that the people he recognizes and runs to, are the ones he can depend on to make sense of an overwhelming world that is nonsensical at times. I love being one of those people that he smiles, laughs, and runs to. It is such a special feeling that, quite honestly, can be the single most precious thing about being a mother to date.
