Year 1, Day 122

Jackson happily endured a few hours out in the Vermont farmlands, sledding for the first time. I wouldn't necessarily say he loved it, but WE did. We blew up 5 tubes, piled on the winter gear, and strapped jackson in a sled to the top if the hill. The instant memories were priceless. It made me realize that, as a baby, sometimes you have to just go along with the things that your parents present as non-negotiables.

Along with the non-negotiables are the senseless commands for party tricks - such as dancing. Isn't it true that as a baby, grown ups ask you do things for their own comic relief all the time? The words "Jackson - DANCE!" leads to a flailing of arms, head bobs, bouncing knees, and the cutest grin. I can't help myself sometimes - it's so darn precious.

Aside from "DANCE!", "Jackson - SPIN!!", provokes an all out twirl that keeps going until he is dizzy and falls or until you physically stop him. There are other party tricks he plays on command, but I try to limit it to the few that make my heart smile. Overexcessive use of tricks is obnoxious.

So, as a child, you are asked to go along with certain things - without question, and just be expected to do them with a smile. I guess it's all part of life. Heck, we are still asked to do things we'd rather not, but we go along with it, to keep the peace and keep the world running smoothly. Hopefully, by next year, Jackson won't just go along with all the hype. Maybe he will actually LOVE choosing a Christmas tree, anticipate all his presents, swoon over the first snowfall, and jump on the sled in sheer excitement. For now, he trusts that if he just goes along with us, he'll be just fine . . . and that's all I can hope for.
