Year 1, Day 162

Obstacle DOES sound like popsicle. Boy did I learn my lesson quick this morning. My enthusiastic request of "let's make an obstacle course!" was misconstrued. Instead of joining in on my fun, I watched as Jackson let out a high pitched scream of excitement and ran to his highchair. Of course it was all in great anticipation of a POPSICLE. It was 7:30 in the morning. So instead, we made smoothies and had fun making up silly rhymes. It still didn't make up for the disappointment.

It makes you wonder what children this age hear when people speak. I think he hears a whole bunch of mumble jumble and then random words he knows. Someone once told me that a child his age recognizes as many words as a dog. I don't know where I was going with that, but it was an interesting thing to consider when you are trying to explain things in a simple way of course, to a one and a half year old and you just get a blank stare or a NO!

I learned that NO! does not always mean NO! This morning it meant, "I want milk, but not in this certain cup." NO! also meant, I want yogurt instead of these eggs you slaved over. All I can conjure up is a certain rhyme that we used as preschool teachers when children were unsatisfied . . . "you get what you get and you don't get upset." It works surprisingly well. Sometimes I wish I could use it on adults.

Oh that must've been horrible! You should keep some popsicles on hand I think. :(

Anyway, I think I was saying that a dog and a two year old know about the same number of words. And it's something like 150, I think. It's more impressive for the dog, not the human... point being, your dog knows a lot more than just: c'mere, sit, down, speak. Those are just the ones that get them treats. But they know others, too.

So don't underestimate that Spratters... he probably doesn't know "obstacle" quite yet - but I think he does know "no, the other cup" - there's just an economy of words. :)
