Year 1, Day 46

It is snowing! It is October 18th, and it is snowing enough to stick on the ground and catch on your tongue. Of course this is prelude to an awful winter, but the first snowfall always has that magical feeling. Last year, Jackson was only a few months old, so he could have been in a rainstorm, snowstorm, or heatwave, and it never really phased him. But today, he was in awe of the flakes falling from the sky.

With this premature snowfall comes the end of long fall walks, light jackets and limited layers, and the ease of getting a little ready to go out the door. Surely, just the change of season makes life a little tougher, but the trade off is the holiday season. The anticipation of seeing his reaction to everything that's magical about Christmas, snowmen, walks in the snow, sledding, snowball fights, snow forts, hot chocolate, skating . . . it's all too much for me to handle - in a good way.

So here it is - Winter in New England and it's only October. Like most of us would say "if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute and it will change." I bet we are planning to have a heat wave tomorrow. Nevertheless, I look forward to the months ahead after getting this little taste of winter today. I guess that makes me a true New Englander.
