Year 1, Day 47

Today it was very refreshing to see Jackson take a handful of leaves and not eat them. Up until this age, he would explore most things by putting it directly in his mouth. Given this oral fixation, he needed to be watched every single second. Today, when we picked up leaves on our walk, I kept a close eye on where they'd end up. But he surprised me, as he sat cheery as ever, in his stroller, and looked closely at every single vein and color of the leaves in his hand.

This is a quite a developmental feat from where we were, with leaves, a few months ago. I had taken him for a walk on our normal route, and began the nightime routine when we arrived home. Like every day, we played a bit, read some books, ate dinner, and then headed for the bath. It wasn't until bath time that we noticed something green in his mouth. I pulled it out, and it was a crumpled green leaf...very good sized I might add. He had been chipmunking the leaf for hours, through dinner, playing, and taking a bath. He has a knack for hiding things in his cheeks. Oh, those gorgeous pinchable cheeks!

So maybe he is past the chipmunking stage, storing all his goodies for later. I'm sure he'll still surprise us now and then when he pulls out dinner . . . while trying to eat his dessert.
