The ride home from Boston each day has become increasingly more difficult to get through as an adult, so I can't imagine what it's like for a 1 year old who has newly discovered mobility and is completely adverse to being strapped in a car seat. In stop and go traffic for miles and miles on the Pike, it is maddening make it to Natick - a mere 20 miles to our humble abode.
I hate Boston drivers. I admit that I am now one of them, but for God Sake, must you tailgate so close that I can see you in my rear view as you read your chapter book, and apply your mascara all while driving with your knees? There is NO reason, whatsoever, for the delays in Newton and Natick that occur on the Pike every evening after work. It's not like there is an accident in the same place everyday causing a curiousity delay. Nope. It's just these random places on the highway where congestion settles, and we drive 60 miles an hour and come to a dead stop. And then repeat. and repeat. and repeat. Add a screaming baby who is arching his back to flip himself from the car seat for the hour drive, and you have a nightmare.
Today, I woke up with a headache that never fully dissipated, so I equipped myself with some precautionary measures upon leaving the house. Earplugs. I swore I would never use earplugs, because it is insensitive and it makes me a bad parent to even think that I want don't want to hear my baby, but I had no choice as I imagined his shrill and blood curdling screaming on a longer than normal, rainy, commute home. This afternoon, about 50 minutes into our dreaded ride, and after consoling Jackson for 49 minutes of that time, we broke open the ear plugs and sat in sweet silence. It was the most beautiful silence I have ever sat in, and somehow - just somehow, it lessened the sting as the Masshole cut us off in his Mercedes - with his license plate "WILD" vanishing on the horizon.

Earplugs are a great invention, however I would caution the "driver" of the vehicle to NOT use them while actually driving.
